Indil Chieftainess

Description

A chieftainess of the Indil clan known as the Inhith, or Mist-People. She is most likely a reknowned warrior with the ability to keep people in line out of a mixture of respect and fear. Indil government works in a kind of modified feudal hierarchy. Each aspect of Indil life in any given village, town, or city is governed by an under-chief of some kind - one to control hunting, fishing, crafting, education, magic, and every other "important" element of life, with a governor presiding over them all. This structure is repeated on a regional level, with every under-chief reporting to an over-chief of the same area of government, with all the over-chiefs in an area coming under the domain of, once again, a chief who keeps them all happy and in line. High-chiefs work at the national level, coordinating this mess and reporting to the paramount chief, who effectively rules the country by finalizing every decision that's passed down to the under-chiefs. That's how it works in principle, but in practice each town and region tends to keep to itself, and the paramount chief is considered to be ill-informed of what's really going on.

Indil culture developed to a late bronze age level before they made contact with more "civilized" nations and got the benefit of their technology. Therefore, Indil art and clothing often looks very primitive and crude to outsiders. In Inlin, the continent where the Indil make their home, the dead reanimate at the drop of a hat, whether it be a dead humanoid or even a simple animal, becoming a dangerous undead that's very hard to eliminate. The only animals whose parts they use are those who have died of old age. They are thus forced to find creative alternatives. Someone wearing as much leather and bone as this chieftainess is obviously very rich and influential; commoners tend to wear simple cloth garments, and any ornamentation they wear is made of metal, which has much less value than bone in Inlin, except for its practicality.

Oy, sorry, didn't mean to rant at you for so long. I just love this kind of thing; fleshing out fictional cultures and societies like this. ^^;

Ooh, pretty. I love her staff.

Woah, that government sounds like a nightmare wrapped in a headache made of bureaucracy. Sounds like a classic chieftancy gone sour. D:
