STEAMPUNK: Hard science fiction can go screw itself, let's go have an airship adventure.
This, in a nutshell, is why I love steampunk. It abandons all pretensions at being hard or serious, takes refuge in audacity, and drops you into a fun world where you can basically have whatever kind of crazy adventure you want. I'll never understand people who try to rationalize the "science" of steampunk; that's so not the point. You don't snap on the defensive when someone points at a fantasy novel and says it could never work, because it's not supposed to. You don't have to do the math, you just have to enjoy yourself.

Oh, I so agree! The best thing about Steampunk is the willingness to have fun that is so refreshingly common. I'm sure there are people out there being all pedantic about it (aren't there always) but there seems to be no lack of sanity -or rather insanity- when it comes to the things that matter. Like pretty outfits, wonderful gadgets, and swashbuckling adventure.
